What is a Geodesic Dome?

The geodesic dome is a dome short struts following geodesic lines and forming an open framework of triangles or polygons. Buckminster Fuller named the geodesic dome in the 1940s and it appealed to him because of how strong it is for it's weight. The geodesic dome is made from a series of triangles while using a minimal amount of materials to achieve its structural strength.
The geodesic dome that I had to make was made out of straws, pipe cleaners, and tape. The straws were to actually make the dome while the pipe cleaners connected the straws together. The tape wasn't a necessary part of making the dome, but it would've been much harder without using the tape to keep the pieces together.

StrawsOne of the first things we had to do was to cut the straws with certain measurements. We needed thirty 2-inch lengths, fifty five 2 5/16-inch lengths, and eighty 2 3/8- inch lengths. Cutting the straws didn't take long, but was tedious.

Pipe CleanersAnother thing we had to do was make the pipe cleaners into connectors with certain amount of points. We needed fifteen 4-way connectors, five 5-way connectors, and forty 6-way connectors. Making the connectors took about as long as it took to cut the straws and also was tedious.

Final ProductMaking the actual dome was hard. At first, we didn't use tape, to it was really hard to keep the pieces together, but then after we found out that we could use tape, it was much easier. The tape didn't allow us to make no mistakes though. Halfway through the process of making the dome I realized that we messed up on the base, so we had to take it down and fix the dome. Fixing it was easy and rebuilding it was also easy because we already but some of it once. The final product was satisfying to look at and even though we had to take it down the first time, we were the first in our class to finish our dome.
